There are few voices in pop culture history that are as distinct and fascinating as Terry Gilliam. The director of “Twelve Monkeys” got his start with the iconic Monty Python comedy troupe in the late 1960s, and was most well-known for creating the absolutely amazing animations that would play in between Python sketches and during the troupe's movies.
Gilliam went on to co-direct the Monty Python movies before establishing himself as one of the world's most provocative and singular artistic voices by helming films like “Brazil,” “Time Bandits” and “The Adventures of Baron Munchausen.”
“Twelve Monkeys” was released right in the middle of a strong decade for interesting movies and for Terry Gilliam. Right between “The Fisher King” and “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas,” “Twelve Monkeys” is an arguable peak in the director's filmography. Much of the movie's idiosyncratic feel comes from Gilliam's choice of Philadelphia-area locations. In a city often overlooked by large film productions, “Twelve Monkeys” represents a creative use of numerous city landmarks including Philadelphia City Hall, the Ben Franklin Bridge, the Metropolitan Opera House and many others. This cult classic immortalized Philadelphia in a that may not be glamorous, but is memorable nonetheless.
